Roman
Republic / Empire
506 B.C. - 476 A.D.
In its infancy, Roman art was heavily influenced
by the
Etruscans, the rulers of Etruria,
and intermittently Rome. With
the rise of the Republic of Rome, followed by the great Roman Empire,
artistic influence came directly from Greece. Greek art
so impressed the Romans that much of what is known of the art
of Greek Antiquity is through
Roman reproductions.
Roman artists were extremely
gifted and adept. The Art of the Roman Period was varied and constantly
changing. As Rome conquered then assimilated
diverse cultures, it took the best artistically of each society
while adding a distinctively Roman interpretation.
